چکیده

Aims Bone fracture risk analysis is a mandatory issue for the prevention of traumatic events and the reduction of medical efforts. The standard analysis for the evaluation of bone fracture risk is the analysis of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) [1, 2]. However, using only BMD to predict bone fracture risk was demonstrated to be not reliable [3]. This is probably due to the role of morphology in bone mechanical structure, which is not taken into consideration by BMD. The increasing use of local analysis for the in-vitro study of trabecular structure [4-6] suggests the importance of local morphometric characteristics of the tissue on the global mechanical behavior. Identification of the broken region can permit to isolate and study the broken region itself and its mechanical behavior, but an extensive approach was always avoided due to the time consuming nature of a manual procedure [4, 5].

Prediction of Trabecular Fracture Zone

Aims Prediction of trabecular fracture zone is a wide challenge not yet solved. Some in-vitro studies pointed out the importance of local variation of the framework for the global behavior of the whole trabecular structure [1-4]. Researchers agree that the identification of the weakest link in the trabecular framework can lead to the prediction of the fracture zone, first, and of the failure ev...

Trabecular Fracture Zone Might Not Be the Higher Strain Region of the Trabecular Framework

Trabecular bone fracture is a traumatic and localized event studied worldwide in order to predict it. During the years, researchers focused over the mechanical characterization of the trabecular tissue to understand its mechanics. Several studies pointed out the very local nature of the trabecular failure, finally identifying the fracture zone with the aim to study it separately. The complexity...

Mandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...

Radiofrequency-targeted vertebral augmentation versus traditional balloon kyphoplasty: radiographic and morphologic outcomes of an ex vivo biomechanical pilot study [Erratum]

PURPOSE Traditional balloon kyphoplasty (BK) is a common treatment for symptomatic vertebral compression fractures. The purpose of this study was to compare a novel vertebral augmentation technique, radiofrequency-targeted vertebral augmentation (RF-TVA), to BK for restoration of vertebral height, cavity creation, and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) delivery and interdigitation into the surroundi...

A curvature-based method for identifying the contact zone between bone fragments: first steps

The use of computer-assisted procedures before or during surgery provides orthopaedic specialists additional information that help them to reduce surgery time and to improve the understanding of the fracture peculiarities. In this context, the calculation of the fracture area is one of the main tasks in order to better comprehend the fracture. This paper presents the initial results of a method...
